My Student Affairs Philosophy
As I transition to a new institution and role, I believe it is important to draw from my values around Student Affairs. As I have learned through my graduate work, understanding my own values enables me to create positive change within the institution and role of which I will work. In continuing to become a scholar practitioner, my values of connection, authenticity, and innovation are consistently aligned with my core understanding of the profession. Below you will find my core understanding of the profession.
To the institution: A clear and consistent “student-centered” mentality
I believe that while student interaction is a large part of what we do, student affairs professionals should also be cognizant that we are also administrators working to uphold the university and academic missions in order to enhance a transformative learning experience. Being student-centered occurs on every level of my profession – not just with students! It may be easy to get caught up in the campus wide activities, but in order to make my mark I believe that innovation in creating new programs will provide a campus environment in which students can thrive academically and personally.
To the students: An advocate for equitable student success
I believe student affairs should supplement an institution’s mission of developing a student both inside and outside the classroom. I believe that historically underrepresented students in higher education deserves more opportunities to showcase their valid experiences with faculty, staff, and peers. I believe that my values of authenticity and connection will empower my students with whom I work to push against the norm and discover who they are and what they stand for. My hope is to walk alongside my students, be a role model for them, and guide their development into strong leaders contributing to society.
To myself: A continued growth in experience and perspective
Finally, I believe that student affairs practitioners should continue to engage in professional development opportunities to ensure we are the best possible professional to our students. Students and colleagues have a rich culture of perspective to share. Their unique experiences will allow me to construct new knowledge and opinions. I believe this crucial element in the profession provides an opportunity to reflect on my personal and professional practices through a new lens. Our students will continue to grow and change throughout our career, and unless we are willing to spend time investing in our own development we will be unable to serve our students.
I am committed to making my mark on both the institution and students with whom I work. Ensuring my values are at the forefront of everything I do will allow me to have a balance of personal interests and professional competency. I hope to create a space where students feel comfortable, safe, supported and encouraged to go beyond the norm and discover their values, skills, and interests. Furthermore, I aim to bring my strengths to my department and consistently work to collaborate with colleagues both interdepartmentally and across campus to provide our students with unique and exciting opportunities for personal and professional growth.
