The 7th annual Maywood Education Fair took place on October 17, 2015 at St. Rose of

The Maywood Education Fair is a partnership between the Department of Educational Leadership at California State University, Fullerton, Center for Research on Educational Access and Leadership (CREAL) and the City of Maywood. Reflection

The Maywood Education Fair is an opportunity for four students to be nominated by their peers to oversee the overall operations of the fair. For the 2015 Maywood Education Fair, Gio, Evelyn, Yessica, and myself were selected for this opportunity. Working with those three individuals was a great learning experience. Our first meeting, we sat down and discussed our strengths, weakness, what stresses us out and how we cope with stress. We discussed in leadership opportunities we have had before this fair. As well as, why we wanted to become maywood co-leads. It was interesting to understand, why we wanted to do it. For us four, the city of maywood and the education fair became a very personal project. We were able to make connections to our own community, as well as the future work we will do in student affairs. I believe setting this tone and help each other understand why we are here set a tone for how we would work with each other. We were able to challenge, grow, and learn from each other. I learned so much from working with those three individuals, and I know i was tough sometimes, but they allowed me to take a step out of my comfort zone.

In reflecting on this experience, I see the true power that stems from taking an asset based approach to learning. I believe that in not regarding students’ existing funds of knowledge and their various forms of capital stemming from Community Cultural Wealth, we risk steering ourselves toward the banking method (as described in Freire, 2000). This banking method involves setting low expectations and thinking of ourselves as heroes or saviors. Therefore, in connection to Maywood, I really appreciated our cohort’s intentionality and focus on funds of knowledge throughout the interventions. The learning outcome was reflective of the entire class as we all collectively placed advanced.
