Term

Fall 2015

Description

My fieldwork site is located in the department of Academic Support Programs and Services where I will work more closely with the Student Diversity Success Iniative (SDSI) by assisting the coordinator of the Fullerton College – Math Institute for Learning Enhancement and Success (FC MILES). The FC MILES program has been designed to help increase success, retention, and graduation rates among students considered to be at risk by enhancing their math skills. Such services include access to an online software program ALEKS, tutoring services, academic counseling, progress monitoring, and workshops. Overall, the FC MILES program will work with underrepresented student populations at this institution to engage the students in their learning and development so they can persist toward graduation.

Learning Outcomes

SWiBAT #1: Utilize Validation Theory to motivate and challenge students of the FC MILES program and develop their math skills necessary for success during the fall semester.

SWiBAT #2: Work with a life skills coach in developing new personal development tracks activities and shadowing a life skills coach.

Reflection

FC MILES started off this semester with many flaws due to my disengagement with the work as I struggled balancing Maywood and work. However, I was able to really engage with the students in the second half of the semester and understand their needs and developmental processes. Many of the students I work with are adult learners seeking to better their math skills in order to take a college level (transfer applicable) math course in the community college. However, many displayed math levels that of middle school. I believe their disengagement with math truly resulted from the insufficent resources available to these students while in their early development phases. FC MILES had a few success stories: 1) A student jumped from Math 15 (pre-Algebra) to a college ready statistics course. 2) Students were describing concepts and tricks to each other because they were confident in their abilities. 3) Students participating showed enormous improvement overall in their math skills from beginning to end. For this, I rate myself an advance.

For the second learning outcome, it was intriguing to see how many students in the community college have extraneous factors affecting their ability to succeed. I'm personally thankful for the SDSI program to exist at this campus because, collectively, the counselors, skill coaches, and student ambassadors work to ensure all students walking into our office leaves with a resource in hand. I worked closed with a skills coach and had much dialogue regarding the many issues students face. I was able to help develop some tracks that will assist students with time management however I was not able to see how those played out. I rated myself competent in this learning because I know I gained an understanding, but can improve much in the connection and engagement of the personal development tracks.
