This was the second Western Regional Conference I have attended.

Reflection
NASPA WRC was an important experience in shaping and informing my professional identity in student affairs as well as my awareness of API leaderships in higher education. I was so surprised by the number of API student affairs professionals at the conference as well as the leadership roles they have. I particularly enjoyed my conversation with Nicole Moya and was challenged to think about what impact I’m having with my students now, and in what ways can the API student affairs community foster more API leaderships into the higher education pipeline. This has caused me to reflect on where I want to be in the future, the impact I want to have, and what kind of support I will need to get there. I’m beginning to see myself as being a leader in student affairs and making an impact for other API students. I rated myself competent in this learning outcome.
I also took away from this conference greater awareness of specific needs first-year students have. Particularly, I learned about first-year students with transition and the constraints many face navigating school. This has high impact on the mental and social health of students. As I reflect more, I am gaining an awareness for students with resources (or lack thereof) at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I hope this awareness will help inform my thinking, programming, and interaction with first-year students. I hope to be more sensitive to their needs and advocate for institutional policies that would support these students in my work place. For the understanding connections made in my workplace, I rated myself competent.
